Kalundborg city is home to the largest biotech hub in Scandinavia and is growing significantly in recent years as both an industrial and knowledge-based city. To support and ensure continued growth, it is essential for the city and the industry's future to create a vibrant educational environment that can attract and retain competitive knowledge. The first step in this process has been to establish strong collaborations across the municipality, industry, and educational institutions, and to create a campus in the city. As part of this, it was decided to create the future FGU Nordvestsjælland, NEG, and Nordvestsjælland HF & VUC on this campus as an educational collaboration, where a strong youth environment and shared academic and recreational educational spaces would strengthen all three schools and create the 'gateway' to the campus.

Vision Document for 'The Gateway to Campus Kalundborg'
To summarize the many existing and future needs and dreams, as well as to lay the first building blocks for future educational and equipment collaborations on the same site, arki_lab organized walk-and-talks, interviews, and vision workshops with a broad group of stakeholders in late summer 2024. The participants included people from the teaching staff and students of all three schools, These workshops ensured a shared understanding of the vision to create an attractive place for young people in education and generated concrete initiatives for action.

The entire process was translated by arki_lab into a vision document that maps the existing needs, sets the direction for the new place, and suggests concrete actions to create value to the everyday life of the young people.

    Application and next steps
The Gateway to Campus Kalundborg has formed the foundation for a large grant application process aimed at renovating and expanding the new educational environment for young people.

It’s not just about new buildings — it’s about creating spaces where young people feel they belong, can grow, and connect across disciplines.
