Street Hub Gilleleje
An urban environment for street sports, youth culture and community
Client: Gribskov Muncipality and Game
Our role: Lead Consultant, Co-creation, Project Management, Detailed Design
Location: Gilleleje, Danmark
Year: 2025-
Status: Ongoing
As part of the MEREGADE programme – developed and owned by GAME – arki_lab is designing the upcoming Street Hub Gilleleje, which will become a new gathering place for young people, street sports, and everyday life at the former railway area in Gilleleje. The project forms a key component in transforming the site into a vibrant new railway park, uniting the existing youth culture house in the historic depot building, Remisen, the new youth school “Perronen”, and Street Hub Gilleleje within a cohesive spatial framework with strong interconnections between the different functions.
Co-creating an inclusive area with the community
The project is developed in parallel with an extensive participatory process involving local street sports practitioners, users of Remisen, young people from the area, and neighbouring residents. Through workshops, dialogues, and design sessions, a shared foundation has been established for shaping a public space that supports activity, informal stay, and social interaction on local terms.
A key focus of the project has been to create synergy between the many different user groups, given the site’s location between two youth schools and directly adjacent to Gilleleje train station. The design is therefore organised into a series of activity and stay zones that enable different users across age groups and skill levels to coexist and engage side by side. These zones accommodate both experienced street sports practitioners, curious beginners, and informal users who simply wish to hang out or observe everyday life in the area – both in open-air settings and under sheltered conditions. A Design founded on history and reuse
In the design, we have balanced new functions with the site’s cultural-historical and architectural values in order to carry forward its historical identity. We have preserved and made visible the former train tracks and the long, linear landscapes from the site’s previous railway use. One example in the new design is the main street of the area, “The Track”, which runs parallel to the new youth school “Perronen” and translates the former railway lines into a connecting element that also enables long, continuous skate routes.
In the project, we have worked with a material strategy based on the reuse of local materials. Reuse is a central part of the architectural identity, supporting both a sustainable agenda and a raw, tactile expression with reference to the roots of street sports as a practice that has emerged and evolved in the backyards and streets of cities. The final material palette is shaped by what becomes available during the project period from demolition sites and contractors in the area.
