From France to Denmark for an Internship

Andreas MortensenEducation, Research

internship, france, exchange, laboratory, experiments,

Malou made an amazing documentation of her summer internship at arki_lab, which you can view in its totality in the end of this post. Below are a few excerpts translated from French, with the original text at the bottom.

ENGLISH:

“THIS IS THE GREAT PLUNGE…”

I just arrived at the office, along with a cup of coffee and a Danish croissant, and I am asked the famous question: “So Malou, what brought you here? Why have you chosen to do an internship at arki_lab?” Oof…I stutter several words in my slow English and then, I tell my main motivations that inspired my research:

THE OUTSIDER: Even though I know that there are also plenty of beautiful experiences living in France, the taste for global experiences each year drives the choice for my internship.

URBAN EXPERIENCE: I haven’t ever really had the chance to live in the city, and I wanted to take the chance to embrace exploring. To live for three months across a large, dense, and unknown urban fabric.

A SMALL OFFICE: This internship marks my first experience in an office. For fear of drowning in the whirlwind of a large office, I preferred to try a small office in order to truly participate in the life of the office.

That’s why the arki_lab office perfectly matches my needs.

TAKING THE TIME TO LOOK AND LISTEN

LISTEN- For three months, I was immersed in projects that center their reflection on the “human scale.” I then worked with this idea of “sensitive” urbanism through the various experimental tools fostering shared, friendly moments between participating citizens. I enjoyed the discovery of the status of “designer mediator”, a role filled with interactions!

LOOK- This professional experience is certainly inseparable from my life experience in the Danish capital. Outside of my work in the office I also made my own “small urban experiences.” For that, it takes time to get off one’s bike, and pause for a moment on a bench in the middle of a living space. Soaking up an atmosphere, such as the hum of the Nørreport train station, or the effervescence of “The Bridge” in Nørrebro or even the quiet canals of Christiania. Taking into account the notion of temporality (flow of activities, user circulation…) these places become the moments that forever compose a public space. These ephemeral spaces then are a source of important information; and constitute the project material. The prior conclusion of my internship can then be filled with optimism for the many other moments to still discover!

THE CONTENT

An internship abroad is foremost an immersion spanning several months in a new country, and the discovery of an unknown cultural context. Therefore, before presenting the office, I am particularly interested in the urban development of the city of Copenhagen. The city follows a capital plan with strict outlines. Attached to these axes is the essence of pleasant life in the Danish capital. It is in these spaces for meeting, sharing, and wellbeing that I have found the foundation of the philosophy of arki_lab. The scale of citizens…

Therefore, I will present the characteristics of this office as an image of an experimental laboratory and its realized projects. To finish, I will make a reflection on my experience.
